Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueC NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The Cowboys bled value on every deal, hence the D.

The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in Anthony Lucas, taking him 38 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. McNeil-Warren at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.

The verdict is not kind, and fairly so; this class has a hill to climb.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. in the 12th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick20 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In slot 20 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick21 Rnd1 Caleb Banks
In Round 1, Pick 21 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. More want than need.
Pick40 Rnd2 Dani Dennis-Sutton
The board had cheaper options than Dani Dennis-Sutton at pick No. 40, and it noticed. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick53 Rnd2 Anthony Lucas
A real head-scratcher, Anthony Lucas in the 53rd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick75 Rnd3 Zakee Wheatley
A tidy little value on Zakee Wheatley in the Round 3 slot, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick76 Rnd3 Julian Neal
Julian Neal at slot 76 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85 Rnd3 Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Taking Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in pick 85 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick87 Rnd3 Jake Golday
Jake Golday is a better player than the 87th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick99 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
The board had Nicholas Singleton higher than Round 3, Pick 35, and the running back fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick112 Rnd4 Trinidad Chambliss
Trinidad Chambliss in No. 112 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
Pick150 Rnd5 Chase Roberts
Chase Roberts at the 150th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick177 Rnd5 Charles Jagusah
Good price on Charles Jagusah in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jordan Hall
They talked themselves into Jordan Hall at pick No. 215, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick221 Rnd7 Colbie Young
Colbie Young at No. 221 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick225 Rnd7 Jack Velling
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jack Velling. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
