Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureA+
The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.

If Morris pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. However the rest shakes out, Singleton at that price is a win they earned.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Kadyn Proctor
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick20 Rnd1 Anthony Hill Jr.
In No. 20 they get the heartbeat of the defense, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick21 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In pick No. 21 they get a three-down second-level presence, reach and all. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40 Rnd2 Dani Dennis-Sutton
They liked Dani Dennis-Sutton enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 40. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick53 Rnd2 A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy at slot 53 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick75 Rnd3 Carson Beck
No drama and no debate, Carson Beck went about where he belonged in the 75th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76 Rnd3 Julian Neal
Julian Neal in the 76th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick85 Rnd3 Caden Curry
Caden Curry at Round 3, Pick 21 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick87 Rnd3 Jake Golday
They read the board right and Jake Golday was the payoff at No. 87. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick99 Rnd3 Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton is a better player than slot 99 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick112 Rnd4 DeMonte Capehart
A wild overpay on DeMonte Capehart in Round 4, Pick 12, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick150 Rnd5 Bud Clark
Bud Clark at the 150th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick177 Rnd5 Dane Key
They paid sticker price for Dane Key in pick 177, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick215 Rnd6 J. Michael Sturdivant
No edge and no loss on J. Michael Sturdivant in the 215th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick221 Rnd7 Brett Norfleet
A tidy little value on Brett Norfleet in pick No. 221, a step better than break-even. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick225 Rnd7 Micah Morris
Micah Morris in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
