Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB
The Cowboys won the weekend at the trade table. Grade: B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Cowboys were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
They will need Jatta to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want.
However the rest shakes out, Lane at that price is a win they earned.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In slot 18 they get the heartbeat of the defense, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick20
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In pick 20 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Jacob Rodriguez
They paid up for Jacob Rodriguez at pick No. 59 when waiting would have done the job. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick92
Rnd3
Devin Moore
They paid sticker price for Devin Moore in Round 3, Pick 28, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick106
Rnd4
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in the 106th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick112
Rnd4
Ja'Kobi Lane
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Ja'Kobi Lane at the Round 4 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick152
Rnd5
Zxavian Harris
They took Zxavian Harris at par in the 152nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick177
Rnd5
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson in No. 177 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick180
Rnd5
Keagen Trost
No edge and no loss on Keagen Trost in the 180th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick196
Rnd6
Taylen Green
A tidy bit of business in the 196th pick, where Taylen Green graded well above the range. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick218
Rnd7
Isaiah Jatta
A wild overpay on Isaiah Jatta in No. 218, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
