Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D
ValueB- NeedB- TradesF FutureA
The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D.

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Cowboys, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. The math is unkind, and the D follows.

They are betting Roberts proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Spending an early pick on edge rusher with quarterback, running back and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.

For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. However the rest shakes out, Golday at that price is a win they earned.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Rueben Bain Jr.
In pick 2 they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value.
Pick12 Rnd1 Mansoor Delane
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 1 slot with a little surplus value in Mansoor Delane. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick16 Rnd1 Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. at slot 16 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick20 Rnd1 Sonny Styles
In pick No. 20 they get a coverage-and-run second-level piece, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick33 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went edge rusher with Caleb Banks while clear needs at quarterback, running back and other spots sat open.
Pick40 Rnd2 Dani Dennis-Sutton
Of all the spots to shop, they chose edge rusher. Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 2, Pick 8 leaves quarterback, running back and other spots for later.
Pick44 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
A straight-up fair deal on Dillon Thieneman at No. 44, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick75 Rnd3 A.J. Haulcy
A want over a need in the 75th overall pick: A.J. Haulcy adds a safety while quarterback, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick87 Rnd3 Jaeden Roberts
Jaeden Roberts at pick 87 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick103 Rnd4 Jake Golday
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending Round 4, Pick 3 on Jake Golday with quarterback, running back and other spots unsolved.
Pick112 Rnd4 Tacario Davis
By-the-book stuff, Tacario Davis at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick150 Rnd5 Chase Roberts
They paid sticker price for Chase Roberts in slot 150, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick177 Rnd5 Charles Jagusah
Charles Jagusah at No. 177 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215 Rnd6 Jordan Hall
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jordan Hall. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick221 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
A reasonable price with a little left over, J. Michael Sturdivant in pick No. 221. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick225 Rnd7 Riley Mahlman
No edge and no loss on Riley Mahlman in the 225th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick242 Rnd7 Jaquaize Pettaway
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaquaize Pettaway. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
