A respectable, level-headed haul for the Patriots: B. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Patriots took Torricelli Simpkins III a full 49 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Membou falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Abdul Carter. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick20
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In the 20th overall pick they get a blindside protector at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 69 with a little surplus value in Jaylin Noel. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips at Round 4, Pick 4 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick144
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in the 144th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick149
Rnd5
Jaylen Reed
They talked themselves into Jaylen Reed at No. 149, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick217
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A premium they did not need to pay, Isaac TeSlaa a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick220
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
Torricelli Simpkins III at pick 220 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
