The Patriots got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the B-.

The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Donovan Smith at the 220th overall pick regardless, 50 picks early.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. They banked enough surplus on Nelson to cover a lot of smaller sins.

It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
