The Steelers cashed the board's mistake on Tampa: B. Call it larceny. T.J. Tampa sat on the board until slot 80, and the Steelers did not need to be asked twice. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Job largely done: quarterback settled and 5 of 9 of the wish list covered. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Their trades came out a wash either way.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick16
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In No. 16 they get a long-term starter on the line. Need was not the driver here.
Pick48
Rnd2
Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson at the 48th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick80
Rnd3
T.J. Tampa
T.J. Tampa in slot 80 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick130
Rnd4
Max Melton
Max Melton is a better player than the 130th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick157
Rnd5
Kedon Slovis
Kedon Slovis slipping to pick No. 157 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick163
Rnd5
Billy Bowman Jr.
Billy Bowman Jr. at Round 5, Pick 27 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
Nothing to complain about; Ty'Ron Hopper went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick194
Rnd6
Connor Colby
Taking Connor Colby in the Round 6 slot is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
