Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
F
ValueC
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureB-
The Cowboys overdrafted Payton and paid the price. Grade: F. There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Cowboys started one anyway for Patrick Payton, 55 picks ahead of schedule.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. It is not that Jackson Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Cowboys had louder needs to answer first. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Getting Haulcy where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Caleb Banks
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptor off the edge, though they paid up to get him. More want than need.
Pick20
Rnd1
Anthony Hill Jr.
In pick No. 20 they get a green-dot type in the middle, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick40
Rnd2
Sonny Styles
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Sonny Styles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick75
Rnd3
A.J. Haulcy
A.J. Haulcy slipping to the 75th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick87
Rnd3
Kenyatta Jackson Jr.
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 23: Kenyatta Jackson Jr. adds an edge rusher while cornerback, running back and other spots keeps waiting.
Pick112
Rnd4
Charles Jagusah
A reach for Charles Jagusah in slot 112; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick151
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at pick 151 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick178
Rnd5
Bud Clark
By-the-book stuff, Bud Clark at Round 5, Pick 39 squarely in line with his ranking. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick215
Rnd6
Luke Altmyer
Luke Altmyer slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the quarterback. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick221
Rnd7
J. Michael Sturdivant
J. Michael Sturdivant in slot 221 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick225
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
They reached into another round for Jordan Hall, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
