Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesF
FutureA+
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D. You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Jamaree Caldwell at the Round 5 slot, roughly 116 spots before his name belonged. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
The Sanders steal is the beam this whole class leans on. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Tre'von Moehrig deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and tight end is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Will Campbell
In pick 6 they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick12
Rnd1
Tre Harris
A reach for Tre Harris in pick No. 12; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick37
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
Kenneth Grant at Round 2, Pick 5 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick44
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at the 44th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick68
Rnd3
Quinn Ewers
They left a pile of value on the table to take Quinn Ewers this early at the 68th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick73
Rnd3
Denzel Burke
Denzel Burke at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76
Rnd3
Tez Johnson
They reached a country mile for Tez Johnson at the 76th pick, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick81
Rnd3
Dani Dennis-Sutton
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dani Dennis-Sutton well ahead of where he belonged. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick107
Rnd4
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at Round 4, Pick 6 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick118
Rnd4
Danny Stutsman
You do not let a linebacker like Danny Stutsman reach slot 118 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick148
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
Steal is underselling it; Cam Skattebo at pick No. 148 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick168
Rnd5
Jamaree Caldwell
Jamaree Caldwell in pick 168 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick170
Rnd5
Max Brosmer
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Max Brosmer. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171
Rnd5
Theo Wease Jr.
Theo Wease Jr. at No. 171 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick187
Rnd6
Xavier Nwankpa
Xavier Nwankpa in pick No. 187 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick209
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
Somehow Raheim Sanders was still sitting there in slot 209, and they pounced on premier running back value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick247
Rnd7
Reuben Fatheree II
A wild overpay on Reuben Fatheree II in pick 247, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
