Draft Grade — Cowboys

The Cowboys got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D. The Cowboys did not so much draft Emery Jones Jr. as overpay for him, 98 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
Henderson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They will answer for taking edge rusher early while linebacker and tight end went begging.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and linebacker is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Tetairoa McMillan
In the 8th pick they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick11
Rnd1
Mason Graham
Fair-plus on Mason Graham, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick39
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
Nic Scourton at slot 39 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick42
Rnd2
DJ Campbell
No edge and no loss on DJ Campbell in the 42nd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick71
Rnd3
Luther Burden III
Circle this one: Luther Burden III at the Round 3 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick75
Rnd3
Carson Beck
Carson Beck in pick No. 75 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick95
Rnd3
Emery Jones Jr.
They talked themselves into Emery Jones Jr. at Round 3, Pick 31, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick107
Rnd4
Tacario Davis
A slide stopped in No. 107, with Tacario Davis worth more than the price. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick110
Rnd4
Dontay Corleone
By-the-book stuff, Dontay Corleone at the 110th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick111
Rnd4
Shemar Turner
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Shemar Turner at edge rusher with linebacker and tight end open.
Pick149
Rnd5
Nicholas Singleton
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick169
Rnd5
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson in pick 169 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick170
Rnd5
Will Howard
Will Howard at slot 170 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick171
Rnd5
Xavier Nwankpa
No drama and no debate, Xavier Nwankpa went about where he belonged in pick No. 171. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick186
Rnd6
Kevin Winston Jr.
They paid up for Kevin Winston Jr. at pick 186 when waiting would have done the job. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick209
Rnd6
J.Michael Sturdivant
J.Michael Sturdivant at the 209th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
