Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedA-
TradesC
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Patriots a B-. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Patriots did exactly that with Davin Vann in pick No. 217.
Hampton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Abdul Carter
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in pick 38 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick69
Rnd3
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at the 69th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick77
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
Nice patience on Elic Ayomanor, who had no business lasting to the Round 3 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick106
Rnd4
Anthony Belton
No drama and no debate, Anthony Belton went about where he belonged in the 106th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick144
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
Nothing to complain about; Malachi Moore went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick149
Rnd5
Aeneas Peebles
Fair-plus on Aeneas Peebles, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick217
Rnd7
Davin Vann
Davin Vann in Round 7, Pick 1 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick220
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
They jumped the gun on Isaac TeSlaa, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
