Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Best value of the weekend goes to the 49ers for Smith-Wade: B.

Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Chau Smith-Wade, the No. 168 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 214. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

They will need Cole to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.

In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Keon Coleman
In slot 31 they get a weapon on the perimeter at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick63 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
A reasonable price with a little left over, T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick94 Rnd3 Caelen Carson
Caelen Carson at No. 94 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick98 Rnd3 Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick in the 98th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132 Rnd4 Darius Robinson
Darius Robinson is a better player than Round 4, Pick 32 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It fills a real need, too.
Pick176 Rnd6 Javon Baker
They liked Javon Baker enough to skip the value, taking him in the 176th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209 Rnd6 Aki Ogunbiyi
A clean, defensible pick in pick 209 with a little surplus value in Aki Ogunbiyi. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick214 Rnd6 Chau Smith-Wade
Taking Chau Smith-Wade in pick No. 214 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick215 Rnd6 Ethan Driskell
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick No. 215 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick249 Rnd7 Myles Cole
Myles Cole in No. 249 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
