Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureA
The Cowboys answered their biggest question with Beck. Grade: D. The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Alfred Collins at Round 5, Pick 31 regardless, 50 picks early.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Carson Beck is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while tight end went begging.
They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it. The Vann steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick Analysis
Pick11
Rnd1
Emeka Egbuka
In the 11th overall pick they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Carson Beck
A straight-up fair deal on Carson Beck at pick No. 16, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick42
Rnd2
Jalen Milroe
Nice patience on Jalen Milroe, who had no business lasting to slot 42. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick47
Rnd2
Nic Scourton
The board had Nic Scourton higher than the Round 2 slot, and the edge rusher fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick61
Rnd2
Emery Jones Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Emery Jones Jr. a notch or two before his time. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick66
Rnd3
Fernando Carmona
No drama and no debate, Fernando Carmona went about where he belonged in the 66th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick73
Rnd3
Ollie Gordon II
They paid a round early for Ollie Gordon II in No. 73, more than the board wanted. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick78
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They went early on Danny Stutsman in pick No. 78, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick102
Rnd4
Raheim Sanders
Raheim Sanders at the Round 4 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick109
Rnd4
J.Michael Sturdivant
A swing that ignored the value entirely, J.Michael Sturdivant well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jordan Burch
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 117 on Jordan Burch with tight end unsolved.
Pick130
Rnd4
Shemar Turner
A curious use of Round 4, Pick 29. Tight end needed the pick; an edge rusher in Shemar Turner did not.
Pick153
Rnd5
Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock slipping to the 153rd overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick169
Rnd5
Alfred Collins
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Alfred Collins. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick170
Rnd5
Azareye'h Thomas
A big swing on Azareye'h Thomas at the 170th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick171
Rnd5
Shilo Sanders
Value said wait; Shilo Sanders in pick No. 171 says they were not listening. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick189
Rnd6
Donovan Smith
Donovan Smith slid further than he should have, and the 189th overall pick is lovely value for the quarterback. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick208
Rnd6
Davin Vann
Steal is underselling it; Davin Vann at No. 208 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
