Draft Grade — Bears
Overall B
ValueB+ NeedB TradesC- FutureA-
The Bears cashed the board's mistake on Hairston: B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Maxwell Hairston had no business being available in slot 156, and the Bears did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

The Brown pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend.

Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
In pick No. 23 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick35 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker in pick 35 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick80 Rnd3 Rod Moore
Rod Moore at the 80th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick82 Rnd3 Patrick Payton
Patrick Payton at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124 Rnd4 Luke Kandra
You do not let an offensive lineman like Luke Kandra reach No. 124 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick156 Rnd5 Maxwell Hairston
They barely believed it either: Maxwell Hairston still on the board at Round 5, Pick 18. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick191 Rnd6 Jordan White
Nice patience on Jordan White, who had no business lasting to slot 191. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick200 Rnd6 Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. in the 200th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick246 Rnd7 Terrance Ferguson
Terrance Ferguson in Round 7, Pick 32 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick256 Rnd7 Antario Brown
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Antario Brown well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
