Draft Grade — Cowboys

FutureA+
Mensah is the Cowboys' new face under center. Grade: D. Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Cowboys, and the value they bled adds up to real damage. A D that will need time and luck to look better.
They are betting Heldt proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The whole projection now runs through Darian Mensah; hit there and everything else looks smarter. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
On value alone, Washington makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Darian Mensah
In slot 3 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick21
Rnd1
Will Heldt
In pick No. 21 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare, though the board says they badly overpaid. Need was not the driver here.
Pick34
Rnd2
Kelley Jones
They paid a round early for Kelley Jones in the Round 2 slot, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick46
Rnd2
Ryan Wingo
No edge and no loss on Ryan Wingo in the 46th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick65
Rnd3
A'Mauri Washington
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the 65th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick67
Rnd3
Ben Roberts
Ben Roberts in pick 67 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105
Rnd4
Brandon Baker
They took Brandon Baker at par in No. 105, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick120
Rnd4
Marcus Neal Jr.
They paid sticker price for Marcus Neal Jr. in Round 4, Pick 18, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
