Draft Grade — Steelers

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Steelers and Smith: B-.

You can usually follow a front office's logic. This one is harder. The Steelers spent the 98th overall pick on Matt Goncalves while quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat unaddressed. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Smith. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Goncalves has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

They went 4 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick20 Rnd1 Graham Barton
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51 Rnd2 Ricky Pearsall
They went early on Ricky Pearsall in Round 2, Pick 19, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick84 Rnd3 Mike Sainristil
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Mike Sainristil at the 84th overall pick is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick98 Rnd3 Matt Goncalves
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick No. 98 on Matt Goncalves with quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved.
Pick119 Rnd4 Mohamed Kamara
They liked Mohamed Kamara enough to skip the value, taking him in the 119th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick178 Rnd6 Tykee Smith
You do not let a safety like Tykee Smith reach slot 178 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick195 Rnd6 Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint at pick 195 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
