Ottis DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Patriots. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent slot 125 on Jalen Thompson, a name most had 53 spots down the list.
On value alone, Frazier makes the weekend a net positive. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Suntarine Perkins
In No. 30 they get a premier pass rusher at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick62
Rnd2
Nate Frazier
You do not let a running back like Nate Frazier reach the 62nd overall pick and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick94
Rnd3
Cooper Barkate
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cooper Barkate in Round 3, Pick 30, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick125
Rnd4
Jalen Thompson
They reached into another round for Jalen Thompson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick130
Rnd4
Kameryn Crawford
Kameryn Crawford in the 130th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick168
Rnd5
Mason Curtis
By-the-book stuff, Mason Curtis at pick No. 168 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick189
Rnd6
LJ McCray
LJ McCray in the 189th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick200
Rnd6
Emerson Mandell
A straight-up fair deal on Emerson Mandell at Round 6, Pick 21, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick207
Rnd6
Elijah Rushing
A wild overpay on Elijah Rushing in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209
Rnd6
Noah Carter
Noah Carter at slot 209 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick246
Rnd7
Austin Romaine
Austin Romaine in pick No. 246 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
