DKDan DRAFTING FOR THEPatriots
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Oluwafemi Oladejo at Round 5, Pick 6 is 93 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.
Getting Harvey where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick4
Rnd1
Will Campbell
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Will Campbell. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick38
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
A safety of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
They reached into another round for Jaylin Noel, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77
Rnd3
Tommi Hill
Tommi Hill in pick No. 77 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick105
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
Jordan Phillips in the 105th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick145
Rnd5
Oluwafemi Oladejo
They talked themselves into Oluwafemi Oladejo at No. 145, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219
Rnd7
RJ Harvey
They will replay RJ Harvey at No. 219 for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick222
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
A wild overpay on Torricelli Simpkins III in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick240
Rnd7
Mac McWilliams
A slide stopped in pick No. 240, with Mac McWilliams worth more than the price. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
