Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-.

The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the 125th overall pick on Derrick Moore a full 30 spots early.

Thieneman at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick30 Rnd1 Denzel Boston
In the 30th overall pick they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick62 Rnd2 Dillon Thieneman
The board had Dillon Thieneman higher than No. 62, and the safety fell to them anyway. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick94 Rnd3 Xavier Chaplin
A conviction pick on Xavier Chaplin at pick 94 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
Pick125 Rnd4 Derrick Moore
A big swing on Derrick Moore at slot 125, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick130 Rnd4 Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at the 130th pick is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick168 Rnd5 Iapani Laloulu
Iapani Laloulu at pick No. 168 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick191 Rnd6 Duce Robinson
Duce Robinson slid further than he should have, and pick No. 191 is lovely value for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick202 Rnd6 Lee Hunter
The board had cheaper options than Lee Hunter at slot 202, and it noticed. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick208 Rnd6 Le'Veon Moss
A clean, defensible pick in the 208th overall pick with a little surplus value in Le'Veon Moss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick211 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Patrick Payton in pick 211, miles early. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick246 Rnd7 Roderick Kearney
Roderick Kearney in the 246th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
