FutureA+
A franchise passer in Penix Jr. headlines a A- weekend for the Bears. They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Michael Penix Jr. is the Bears' quarterback, full stop. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will need Washington to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
In short, they turned a good board into a better roster, and it shows.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
In the 9th pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick23
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
Amarius Mims in pick No. 23 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick27
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson in pick 27 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
Nothing to complain about; Ennis Rakestraw Jr. went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick66
Rnd3
Patrick Paul
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick75
Rnd3
Malik Washington
Malik Washington in slot 75 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106
Rnd4
Bucky Irving
They read the board right and Bucky Irving was the payoff at the 106th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick122
Rnd4
Javon Foster
A tidy little value on Javon Foster in Round 4, Pick 22, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick167
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen at slot 167 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
