A franchise passer in Penix Jr. headlines a A weekend for the Patriots. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. This is how you run a draft, and the A reflects it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. They banked enough surplus on Wiggins to cover a lot of smaller sins.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Malik Nabers
In No. 7 they get a No. 1 receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick22
Rnd1
Michael Penix Jr.
The board had Michael Penix Jr. higher than the Round 1 slot, and the quarterback fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick31
Rnd1
JC Latham
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get protection for the quarterback, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick38
Rnd2
Nate Wiggins
They robbed the room for Nate Wiggins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick53
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette is a better player than the 53rd overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
