Draft Grade — Bengals

Brooks should have been long gone. The Bengals pounced, and earned a B+. Thirty-one other rooms let Tahj Brooks slide, and the Bengals were the ones holding the card at the Round 6 slot. Highway robbery. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
They are betting Kandra proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
Mason Graham
In No. 17 they get a disruptive interior force at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick55
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in pick No. 55 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick81
Rnd3
Luke Kandra
Luke Kandra in the 81st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick117
Rnd4
Jack Nelson
They paid sticker price for Jack Nelson in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick152
Rnd5
Mason Taylor
Mason Taylor at the 152nd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick179
Rnd6
Lathan Ransom
Circle this one: Lathan Ransom at slot 179 is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick191
Rnd6
Tahj Brooks
Taking Tahj Brooks in Round 6, Pick 16 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
