A sensible, unshowy class lands the Lions a B-.

Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Lions to leave a draft. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

Jones has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Dial at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They went 4 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the defensive front at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick61 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
A tidy little value on Edgerrin Cooper in slot 61, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick73 Rnd3 Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley at Round 3, Pick 9 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick92 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni in pick 92 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick163 Rnd5 Chau Smith-Wade
No edge and no loss on Chau Smith-Wade in the 163rd pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick207 Rnd6 Marcellas Dial
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Marcellas Dial in No. 207. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247 Rnd7 Matthew Jones
They liked Matthew Jones enough to skip the value, taking him in the 247th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
