Draft Grade — Texans
Overall

FutureD
Nobody dealt better than the Texans this weekend: B. The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 236 on Julius Welschof a full 103 spots early.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. However the rest shakes out, Legette at that price is a win they earned. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
A slide stopped in Round 1, Pick 23, with Cooper DeJean worth more than the price. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick24
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In pick No. 24 they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette in No. 59 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick85
Rnd3
Junior Colson
Junior Colson slipping to slot 85 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick87
Rnd3
Trey Benson
The board had Trey Benson higher than the 87th pick, and the running back fell to them anyway. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick124
Rnd4
Jaheim Bell
Jaheim Bell at the 124th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick128
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
A reach on Malik Mustapha in No. 128; the board had better options right there. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick161
Rnd5
Xavier Thomas
A real head-scratcher, Xavier Thomas in pick 161 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick236
Rnd7
Julius Welschof
They reached a country mile for Julius Welschof at Round 7, Pick 16, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick245
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
They talked themselves into Tanner McLachlan at the Round 7 slot, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
