Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA+ FutureD
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Texans a B.

Nobody else had Tanner McLachlan anywhere near the 245th pick. The Texans did, by 34 spots, and that gap is the whole story.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. That Legette pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
In pick 23 they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that.
Pick24 Rnd1 Dallas Turner
In No. 24 they get a double-digit-sack hope, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
They will replay Xavier Legette at the 59th pick for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick85 Rnd3 Marist Liufau
By-the-book stuff, Marist Liufau at pick No. 85 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick87 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Leonard Taylor III well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki in the Round 4 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick128 Rnd4 Will Shipley
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in pick 128, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick161 Rnd5 Renardo Green
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Renardo Green at the 161st pick. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick236 Rnd7 Taulia Tagovailoa
Fair-plus on Taulia Tagovailoa, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at the Round 7 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
