Draft Grade — Texans
Overall C+
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesC+ FutureD
Flashes of a plan, unevenly executed. Texans: C+.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Texans watched Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint slide 49 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. A mixed bag that lands at C+.

Reaching for Hopper left real value on the table behind him. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.

If Byron Murphy II and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Byron Murphy II
In the Round 1 slot they get a run-stuffing presence up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick24 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In No. 24 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59 Rnd2 Max Melton
No edge and no loss on Max Melton in slot 59; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick86 Rnd3 Xavier Legette
They read the board right and Xavier Legette was the payoff at the 86th overall pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick87 Rnd3 Dominick Puni
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dominick Puni. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick122 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick126 Rnd4 Ty'Ron Hopper
They reached into another round for Ty'Ron Hopper, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick224 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick 224 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick238 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
A slide stopped in pick No. 238, with Tyler Owens worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick247 Rnd7 Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint
You do not let a wide receiver like Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint reach the 247th pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
