Draft Grade — Dolphins

FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Dolphins to a D. The Dolphins clearly saw something nobody else did in Tanor Bortolini, taking him 31 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The Dolphins clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Amarius Mims. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick55
Rnd2
Malachi Corley
Malachi Corley in pick 55 is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick65
Rnd3
Christian Haynes
Christian Haynes in the 65th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick77
Rnd3
Brandon Dorlus
Brandon Dorlus at the 77th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Leonard Taylor III
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Leonard Taylor III well ahead of where he belonged. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray in slot 106 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick121
Rnd4
Chau Smith-Wade
No drama and no debate, Chau Smith-Wade went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 21. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick158
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tanor Bortolini this early at the 158th pick. It fills a real need, too.
Pick192
Rnd6
Kendall Milton
A reach for Kendall Milton in pick No. 192; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick204
Rnd6
Jaylan Ford
They took Jaylan Ford at par in slot 204, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
