Draft Grade — Bears

FutureB-
The Bears worked the phones like thieves and earned a B. The tape said wait; the Bears did not. Eric Gentry went at the Round 6 slot, a good 54 picks before the board was ready.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The McNeil-Warren value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The Kilgore pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with quarterback still on the board. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Kayden McDonald
In the 29th overall pick they get a disruptive interior force. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59
Rnd2
Lee Hunter
A premium they did not need to pay, Lee Hunter a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick90
Rnd3
Nicholas Singleton
Nicholas Singleton in pick 90 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick91
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
The board fumbled Emmanuel McNeil-Warren all the way to the 91st pick, and they scooped it up. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick93
Rnd3
Malachi Lawrence
A real head-scratcher, Malachi Lawrence in Round 3, Pick 29 is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick106
Rnd4
Jalon Kilgore
A curious use of slot 106. Quarterback needed the pick; a safety in Jalon Kilgore did not.
Pick129
Rnd4
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at Round 4, Pick 29 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick150
Rnd5
Sam Roush
They paid sticker price for Sam Roush in pick 150, and that is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick163
Rnd5
Brenen Thompson
Brenen Thompson at No. 163 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick215
Rnd6
Eric Gentry
They talked themselves into Eric Gentry at the Round 6 slot, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Ricardo Hallman
They took Ricardo Hallman at par in slot 239, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick241
Rnd7
Micah Morris
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Micah Morris. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
