Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureD
The Texans worked the phones like thieves and earned a B-.

Nobody had Xavier Thomas this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 91 spots to get him at No. 164. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through offensive lineman.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Watson.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Terrion Arnold
Terrion Arnold at Round 1, Pick 23 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick24 Rnd1 Chop Robinson
In the 24th overall pick they get a problem off the edge, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
Edgerrin Cooper in slot 59 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick85 Rnd3 Roman Wilson
A clean, defensible pick in the 85th pick with a little surplus value in Roman Wilson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick87 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 87 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick123 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
A conviction pick on Jaheim Bell at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick127 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
They paid a round early for Malik Mustapha in pick 127, more than the board wanted. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick164 Rnd5 Xavier Thomas
Xavier Thomas in No. 164 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick239 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Blake Watson slid further than he should have, and the Round 7 slot is lovely value for the running back. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick248 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
A wild overpay on Tanner McLachlan in pick No. 248, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
