Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall
A
ValueB+
NeedB+
TradesA+
FutureA+
The Chiefs cashed the board's mistake on Johnson: A. You could see the war room lean forward. Tae Johnson at No. 79 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Hill pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back still on the board.
Bottom line, with Trey'Dez Green leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick Analysis
Pick1
Rnd1
Jeremiah Smith
Jeremiah Smith in Round 1, Pick 1 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick6
Rnd1
Dylan Stewart
In the 6th pick they get juice off the edge. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick16
Rnd1
Leonard Moore
In the Round 1 slot they get a ballhawk on the outside, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
Pick32
Rnd1
Trey'Dez Green
In pick 32 they get a seam-stretching tight end, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
David Stone
Nice patience on David Stone, who had no business lasting to pick No. 33. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick37
Rnd2
Jordan Seaton
Jordan Seaton at slot 37 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick64
Rnd2
Kade Pieper
Kade Pieper in No. 64 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick69
Rnd3
Sammy Brown
A linebacker of that caliber at the 69th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick79
Rnd3
Tae Johnson
Tae Johnson at pick 79 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick96
Rnd3
Jyaire Hill
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jyaire Hill at cornerback with running back open.
Pick134
Rnd4
Xavier Atkins
Circle this one: Xavier Atkins at No. 134 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick137
Rnd4
Drake Lindsey
Drake Lindsey at slot 137 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick170
Rnd5
Christian Gray
Steal is underselling it; Christian Gray at the Round 5 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick210
Rnd6
Drew Bobo
Drew Bobo at the 210th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick219
Rnd6
Zavier Mincey
They robbed the room for Zavier Mincey here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick256
Rnd7
Brett Norfleet
Brett Norfleet in the 256th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
