DMW DRAFTING FOR THECowboys
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
B
ValueB
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
A respectable, level-headed haul for the Cowboys: B. The Cowboys spent real capital to be 40 picks early on Shilo Sanders, and the board is going to hold them to it.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. On value alone, Walker makes the weekend a net positive. On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a bell-cow for the offense, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker in the 44th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick76
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
They did well to land Maxwell Hairston in pick No. 76, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick149
Rnd5
Luke Kandra
By-the-book stuff, Luke Kandra at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick171
Rnd5
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
A premium they did not need to pay, Dont'e Thornton Jr. a notch or two before his time. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick174
Rnd5
Ajani Cornelius
No drama and no debate, Ajani Cornelius went about where he belonged in No. 174. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick204
Rnd6
CJ West
They let CJ West come to them and pounced at No. 204. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick211
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in Round 6, Pick 35 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick239
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A reasonable price with a little left over, Isaac TeSlaa in pick 239. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick247
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
Value said wait; Shilo Sanders in the 247th overall pick says they were not listening. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
