FutureB
The Steelers fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+. The Steelers torched the value chart for Trajan Jeffcoat, taking him 113 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. More right than wrong, and a B+ to match.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. Leaving safety unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Getting DeJean where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The Nourzad pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with safety still on the board.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Quinyon Mitchell
In pick 23 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick28
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In pick No. 28 they get a building block for the line at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
Pick51
Rnd2
Cooper DeJean
They barely believed it either: Cooper DeJean still on the board at slot 51. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick60
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
The board fumbled Xavier Legette all the way to Round 2, Pick 28, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick98
Rnd3
James Williams
James Williams in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick108
Rnd4
Hunter Nourzad
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 108 on Hunter Nourzad with safety unsolved.
Pick119
Rnd4
Luke McCaffrey
They left a pile of value on the table to take Luke McCaffrey this early at pick 119. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick128
Rnd4
Will Shipley
Taking Will Shipley in the 128th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Pick129
Rnd4
Tommy Eichenberg
They liked Tommy Eichenberg enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 129. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick134
Rnd4
Blake Fisher
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Blake Fisher at offensive lineman with safety open.
Pick144
Rnd5
Theo Johnson
Steal is underselling it; Theo Johnson at No. 144 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick160
Rnd5
Gabe Hall
Gabe Hall at Round 5, Pick 24 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick178
Rnd6
Jordan Travis
They did well to land Jordan Travis in slot 178, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick195
Rnd6
Trajan Jeffcoat
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trajan Jeffcoat well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
