A franchise passer in Maye headlines a B- weekend for the Commanders.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

Devonshire falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Drake Maye
In the Round 1 slot they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
Pick36 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell in pick No. 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick40 Rnd2 Javon Bullard
No edge and no loss on Javon Bullard in pick 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick71 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Cade Stover at slot 71 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick78 Rnd3 Max Melton
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100 Rnd3 Cam Hart
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Hart at Round 3, Pick 37, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138 Rnd5 Spencer Rattler
Circle this one: Spencer Rattler at the 138th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Pick139 Rnd5 Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten in the 139th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick152 Rnd5 Tykee Smith
They paid up for Tykee Smith at slot 152 when waiting would have done the job. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick162 Rnd5 Dillon Johnson
They took Dillon Johnson at par in the Round 5 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick222 Rnd7 M.J. Devonshire
The board fumbled M.J. Devonshire all the way to No. 222, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick226 Rnd7 Jaylan Ford
They barely believed it either: Jaylan Ford still on the board at Round 7, Pick 6. A minor itch, scratched.
