Draft Grade — Bengals
Overall D-
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureB-
Newton should have been long gone. The Bengals pounced, and earned a D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Bengals did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback. Newton at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In the Round 1 slot they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick41 Rnd2 Edgerrin Cooper
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick58 Rnd2 Ruke Orhorhoro
Good price on Ruke Orhorhoro in slot 58, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick80 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul at the 80th overall pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick91 Rnd3 Cade Stover
Cade Stover at Round 3, Pick 28 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick114 Rnd4 Audric Estime
A quiet steal in No. 114: Audric Estime for less than the market said. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick148 Rnd5 Josh Newton
Josh Newton at the 148th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick193 Rnd6 Delmar Glaze
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Delmar Glaze at pick No. 193 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick208 Rnd6 Tahj Washington
They let Tahj Washington come to them and pounced at pick 208. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick214 Rnd6 Nathaniel Watson
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 6 slot with a little surplus value in Nathaniel Watson. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick237 Rnd7 Tyler Owens
Value with a capital V on Tyler Owens in the 237th overall pick, a genuine coup. It adds depth where they could use a little.
