Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
C+
ValueB+
NeedB
TradesF
FutureB
Larceny in No. 194 lands the Commanders a C+, Shough and all. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Tyler Shough got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at the 194th pick.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
If Simpkins III pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
If Kenneth Grant and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick Analysis
Pick40
Rnd2
Kenneth Grant
A interior defensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick64
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
They barely believed it either: Xavier Watts still on the board at pick 64. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick70
Rnd3
Darien Porter
Darien Porter at the 70th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick79
Rnd3
Bradyn Swinson
Somehow Bradyn Swinson was still sitting there in slot 79, and they pounced on premier edge rusher value. It fills a real need, too.
Pick94
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
Donovan Jackson at the 94th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick129
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jared Wilson in No. 129, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick130
Rnd4
Tory Horton
Circle this one: Tory Horton at Round 4, Pick 29 is a fall that decides a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick143
Rnd5
Darius Alexander
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Darius Alexander at pick No. 143 is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick165
Rnd5
Logan Brown
The board fumbled Logan Brown all the way to pick No. 165, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick181
Rnd6
Nohl Williams
Nothing to complain about; Nohl Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick194
Rnd6
Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in the Round 6 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick207
Rnd6
Donovan Edwards
Donovan Edwards in Round 6, Pick 29 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick238
Rnd7
Torricelli Simpkins III
A reach on Torricelli Simpkins III in No. 238; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick250
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
They robbed the room for Jack Kiser here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
