FutureB-
Larceny in the 196th pick lands the Bengals a D, Phillips and all. Call it larceny. Andru Phillips sat on the board until pick No. 196, and the Bengals did not need to be asked twice. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The cost of the Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick18
Rnd1
Taliese Fuaga
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a building block for the line at fair value.
Pick36
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
No drama and no debate, Ja'Tavion Sanders went about where he belonged in pick 36. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick49
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske in the 49th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick80
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice at the 80th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick101
Rnd4
Edgerrin Cooper
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 101 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick103
Rnd4
Kamari Lassiter
Kamari Lassiter at slot 103 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick148
Rnd5
Dillon Johnson
They reached into another round for Dillon Johnson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick175
Rnd5
Trevor Keegan
A quiet steal in No. 175: Trevor Keegan for less than the market said. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick196
Rnd6
Andru Phillips
Circle this one: Andru Phillips at pick No. 196 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick235
Rnd7
Tyrice Knight
Tyrice Knight at the 235th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Brevyn Spann-Ford
Brevyn Spann-Ford slipping to the 252nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
