Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureC+
Grand theft in pick No. 238: the Commanders steal Higgins and grade out a C. When a board-topper like Jay Higgins slides to pick 238, you do not overthink it, and the Commanders did not. A weekend of give and take that grades a C.
Every board in the league had Griffith lower, and that gap is the story. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick Analysis
Pick40
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Tyler Warren at the 40th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick44
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
Circle this one: Nick Emmanwori at the Round 2 slot is a fall that decides a draft. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick61
Rnd2
Azareye'h Thomas
Azareye'h Thomas in pick 61 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick71
Rnd3
Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton in Round 3, Pick 7 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick79
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Donovan Jackson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick95
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
Demetrius Knight Jr. at pick No. 95 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jordan Phillips
They jumped the gun on Jordan Phillips, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick130
Rnd4
Darius Alexander
They paid sticker price for Darius Alexander in the 130th overall pick, and that is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick148
Rnd5
Kyren Lacy
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kyren Lacy at Round 5, Pick 9. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick209
Rnd6
Ryan Fitzgerald
A specialist of that caliber at the 209th pick is the definition of value, full stop. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jay Higgins
You do not let a linebacker like Jay Higgins reach pick No. 238 and blink. They did not. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick250
Rnd7
James Burnip
They will replay James Burnip at slot 250 for years; that is how good the value is. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick254
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
Thor Griffith at No. 254 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Pick257
Rnd7
Bhayshul Tuten
Steal is underselling it; Bhayshul Tuten at pick 257 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
