Draft Grade — Commanders

FutureC
The Commanders cashed the board's mistake on Neal: C+. You could see the war room lean forward. Devin Neal at pick No. 186 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
So much rides on Tyler Warren that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick Analysis
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
Taking Tyler Warren in No. 41 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick42
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen in the 42nd overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick44
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
They will replay Nick Emmanwori at pick No. 44 for years; that is how good the value is. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick61
Rnd2
Tyler Booker
Tyler Booker at the Round 2 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick79
Rnd3
Omarion Hampton
Circle this one: Omarion Hampton at the 79th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick93
Rnd3
Jack Bech
Jack Bech at pick 93 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick95
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Donovan Jackson in Round 3, Pick 31. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick103
Rnd4
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They robbed the room for Demetrius Knight Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick111
Rnd4
O'Donnell Fortune
A reach on O'Donnell Fortune in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick148
Rnd5
Danny Stutsman
Danny Stutsman in pick 148 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick152
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
A safety of that caliber at the 152nd overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick186
Rnd6
Devin Neal
Steal is underselling it; Devin Neal at slot 186 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
Pick207
Rnd6
Ryan Fitzgerald
They barely believed it either: Ryan Fitzgerald still on the board at the 207th pick. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick234
Rnd7
Cody Simon
Somehow Cody Simon was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 16, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick235
Rnd7
Lander Barton
You do not let a linebacker like Lander Barton reach pick No. 235 and blink. They did not. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick238
Rnd7
Jordan Hancock
The board fumbled Jordan Hancock all the way to No. 238, and they scooped it up. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Pick250
Rnd7
James Burnip
A top-tier specialist at a bargain, James Burnip in slot 250, plain and simple. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick256
Rnd7
Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten in the 256th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick257
Rnd7
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at pick No. 257 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
