Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall B-
ValueA NeedB- TradesC FutureC-
The Commanders robbed the room for James. Final grade: B-.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Commanders watched Jordan James slide 133 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.

The cost of the Griffith reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. The veteran additions, Olumuyiwa Fashanu chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick29 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
In Round 1, Pick 29 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick40 Rnd2 Nick Emmanwori
They robbed the room for Nick Emmanwori here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick76 Rnd3 Jayden Higgins
Fair-plus on Jayden Higgins, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick79 Rnd3 Jihaad Campbell
Taking Jihaad Campbell in No. 79 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick95 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
They barely believed it either: Tate Ratledge still on the board at the 95th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick103 Rnd4 Kaleb Johnson
Somehow Kaleb Johnson was still sitting there in slot 103, and they pounced on premier running back value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick137 Rnd4 Jared Wilson
They will replay Jared Wilson at the 137th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick148 Rnd5 Darius Alexander
The board fumbled Darius Alexander all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick174 Rnd5 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom at pick 174 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick207 Rnd6 Ryan Fitzgerald
Circle this one: Ryan Fitzgerald at the 207th pick is a fall that decides a draft. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick238 Rnd7 Jordan Hancock
Jordan Hancock in No. 238 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick250 Rnd7 James Burnip
James Burnip in Round 7, Pick 32 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick256 Rnd7 Jordan James
A running back of that caliber at pick No. 256 is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick257 Rnd7 Thor Griffith
A real head-scratcher, Thor Griffith in slot 257 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
