Draft Grade — Patriots

A franchise passer in McCarthy headlines a B weekend for the Patriots.

The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.

They banked enough surplus on Mustapha to cover a lot of smaller sins. Nugent has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.

They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick11 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In No. 11 they get a long-term answer under center, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick23 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In pick 23 they get a disruptor off the edge, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick34 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
They paid sticker price for Adonai Mitchell in Round 2, Pick 2, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick68 Rnd3 Kingsley Suamataia
Kingsley Suamataia at the 68th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick71 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
Patrick Paul in the 71st pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick103 Rnd4 Bralen Trice
Circle this one: Bralen Trice at the Round 4 slot is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick137 Rnd5 Sataoa Laumea
A tidy little value on Sataoa Laumea in pick No. 137, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
Pick180 Rnd6 Christian Jones
Christian Jones in slot 180 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick193 Rnd6 Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent at slot 193 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick226 Rnd7 Malik Mustapha
The board fumbled Malik Mustapha all the way to pick 226, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick231 Rnd7 Bub Means
The board had cheaper options than Bub Means at the Round 7 slot, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
