Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A-
ValueB NeedB- TradesA+ FutureA+
The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Hadden: A-.

The Patriots ran the phones like sharks, prying loose value on deal after deal until the ledger was lopsided. Add it all up and it grades out a clean A-.

The Hadden value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They are betting Means proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.

In the end it comes back to Nate Wiggins, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Nate Wiggins
In No. 18 they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
Pick34 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
No drama and no debate, Jordan Morgan went about where he belonged in pick 34. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick49 Rnd2 Jackson Powers-Johnson
Nice patience on Jackson Powers-Johnson, who had no business lasting to the 49th pick. The roster fit checks out.
Pick77 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
A quiet steal in slot 77: Patrick Paul for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
Pick80 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk at Round 3, Pick 16 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick112 Rnd4 Brenden Rice
Brenden Rice is a better player than the 112th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick115 Rnd4 Maason Smith
Maason Smith at Round 4, Pick 15 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick137 Rnd5 Jarrian Jones
Jarrian Jones at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick180 Rnd6 Jordan Travis
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jordan Travis in No. 180. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick193 Rnd6 Kamal Hadden
Kamal Hadden at slot 193 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick223 Rnd7 Caedan Wallace
Caedan Wallace in the 223rd pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick231 Rnd7 Bub Means
Bub Means at the 231st overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
