Templar DRAFTING FOR THEBrowns
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
More right than wrong for the Browns, and a B- to prove it. There is reaching, and then there is Red Murdock at pick 107. The Browns jumped the board by 62 and dared it to prove them wrong. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On the needs board they went 7 of 9, with quarterback the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Carnell Tate
In Round 1, Pick 6 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick24
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In the 24th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A real need, handled.
Pick39
Rnd2
Olaivavega Ioane
Olaivavega Ioane at pick No. 39 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick70
Rnd3
Emmanuel McNeil-Warren
Good price on Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in the Round 3 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick107
Rnd4
Red Murdock
They left a pile of value on the table to take Red Murdock this early at slot 107. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick139
Rnd5
Taylen Green
A wild overpay on Taylen Green in the 139th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick144
Rnd5
Nadame Tucker
A conviction pick on Nadame Tucker at pick No. 144 that the board grades a round light. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147
Rnd5
Patrick Payton
This one needs a full-page explanation: Patrick Payton in slot 147, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick204
Rnd6
Tony Grimes
Tony Grimes at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick248
Rnd7
Rueben Owens II
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Rueben Owens II. A need, and now a little less of one.
