Dixon should have been long gone. The Seahawks pounced, and earned a B. Somebody in pick No. 251 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Seahawks sat still while Johnny Dixon, the No. 191 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The cost of the Wingo reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
The Seahawks indulged a want in Solomon while a need in edge rusher, quarterback and other spots stayed open.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick Analysis
Pick31
Rnd1
Tyler Guyton
In pick 31 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick81
Rnd3
Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo at the Round 3 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Solomon
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in No. 94 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
Pick102
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
They left a pile of value on the table to take Theo Johnson this early at the 102nd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick118
Rnd4
Trevor Keegan
Trevor Keegan in Round 4, Pick 18 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick179
Rnd6
Kitan Oladapo
Taking Kitan Oladapo in the 179th pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick192
Rnd6
Nathaniel Watson
Nathaniel Watson in pick No. 192 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick235
Rnd7
Tahj Washington
Tahj Washington at slot 235 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick251
Rnd7
Johnny Dixon
Johnny Dixon at No. 251 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
