Draft Grade — Texans

ValueB- NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Texans spent Round 7, Pick 27 on Marvin Jones Jr., a name the board had a full 95 spots lower. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Banks pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Olaivavega Ioane
In slot 28 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38 Rnd2 Gennings Dunker
A reach for Gennings Dunker in pick 38; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick59 Rnd2 Caleb Banks
The board had Caleb Banks higher than the Round 2 slot, and the interior defensive lineman fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick69 Rnd3 Jacob Rodriguez
A reach on Jacob Rodriguez in the 69th pick; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick106 Rnd4 Sam Roush
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Sam Roush at No. 106. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick128 Rnd4 Logan Jones
They paid sticker price for Logan Jones in Round 4, Pick 28, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick165 Rnd5 VJ Payne
VJ Payne in the 165th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick243 Rnd7 Marvin Jones Jr.
A real head-scratcher, Marvin Jones Jr. in pick 243 is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick244 Rnd7 Robert Spears-Jennings
Robert Spears-Jennings in No. 244 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
