Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

The Tanner McLachlan pick is the one that will follow the Texans into the fall. They took him 34 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Getting Green where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Jared Verse
In slot 23 they get a disruptor off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
A clean, defensible pick in No. 59 with a little surplus value in Chris Braswell. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick85 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III at pick No. 85 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick124 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki at Round 4, Pick 24 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick128 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick161 Rnd5 Renardo Green
Renardo Green slid further than he should have, and the 161st overall pick is lovely value for the safety. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick236 Rnd7 Blake Watson
Fair-plus on Blake Watson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tanner McLachlan this early at the 245th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
