Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueB- NeedB- TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-.

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Tanner McLachlan at the 245th pick is 34 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

Legette falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Terrion Arnold
In No. 23 they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
Pick59 Rnd2 Xavier Legette
Somehow Xavier Legette was still sitting there in slot 59, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick85 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III in the 85th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick124 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
A reach on Sione Vaki in the Round 4 slot; the board had better options right there. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick128 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
A straight-up fair deal on Cedric Gray at Round 4, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick161 Rnd5 Renardo Green
They let Renardo Green come to them and pounced at pick 161. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick236 Rnd7 Blake Watson
A tidy little value on Blake Watson in slot 236, a step better than break-even. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
A real head-scratcher, Tanner McLachlan in pick No. 245 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
