Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueC+
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
A sensible, unshowy class lands the Texans a B-. Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Texans spent No. 86 on Maason Smith, a name most had 25 spots down the list.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Tampa at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick42
Rnd2
Edgerrin Cooper
They took Edgerrin Cooper at par in Round 2, Pick 10, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick59
Rnd2
T.J. Tampa
A slide stopped in the 59th overall pick, with T.J. Tampa worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick86
Rnd3
Maason Smith
Maason Smith at pick No. 86 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick123
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
They paid sticker price for Johnny Wilson in the 123rd pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick127
Rnd4
Isaac Guerendo
No drama and no debate, Isaac Guerendo went about where he belonged in No. 127. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick188
Rnd6
Logan Lee
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Logan Lee well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick247
Rnd7
Tyler Owens
The board had cheaper options than Tyler Owens at the 247th pick, and it noticed. A minor need, but a need all the same.
