Powerful DRAFTING FOR THETexans
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Texans kept it disciplined and banked a B-. Some picks age like wine; Julius Welschof at Round 7, Pick 28 will need to, sitting 92 spots clear of his grade. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
For all the activity, offensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The DeJean pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Cooper DeJean
In the 23rd pick they get a ballhawk on the outside, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick59
Rnd2
Chris Braswell
Chris Braswell in pick 59 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick85
Rnd3
Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske at pick No. 85 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick123
Rnd4
Malik Mustapha
Malik Mustapha at the Round 4 slot jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick127
Rnd4
Will Shipley
By-the-book stuff, Will Shipley at slot 127 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick164
Rnd5
De'Corian Clark
De'Corian Clark at Round 5, Pick 28 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick239
Rnd7
Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan in Round 7, Pick 19 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick248
Rnd7
Julius Welschof
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Julius Welschof. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
