Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
The Texans checked most of the boxes and earned a B.

Nobody else had Tanner McLachlan anywhere near the 245th pick. The Texans did, by 34 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.

The offensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Getting Colson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with running back the one that mattered most.

The skill positions did well by the weekend.

Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Rome Odunze
In the 23rd pick they get a No. 1 receiver, outstanding value to boot. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick59 Rnd2 T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick85 Rnd3 Junior Colson
A quiet steal in pick 85: Junior Colson for less than the market said. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick124 Rnd4 Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki at slot 124 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick128 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
They went early on Jaheim Bell in the 128th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Pick161 Rnd5 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A conviction pick on Zion Tupuola-Fetui at Round 5, Pick 25 that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick236 Rnd7 Blake Watson
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Watson in the Round 7 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
This one needs a full-page explanation: Tanner McLachlan in slot 245, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
