Draft Grade — Texans

Trotter Jr. should have been long gone. The Texans pounced, and earned a B-.

You build a draft on nights like this. Jeremiah Trotter Jr. had no business being available in slot 85, and the Texans did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

For all the activity, wide receiver went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for McLachlan left real value on the table behind him.

Running back was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The weekend tilted hard toward the defense.

Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Cooper DeJean
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Cooper DeJean at pick No. 23 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick59 Rnd2 Chris Braswell
Nothing to complain about; Chris Braswell went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at the 85th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
A reach for Jaheim Bell in No. 124; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick128 Rnd4 Malik Mustapha
They paid up for Malik Mustapha at Round 4, Pick 28 when waiting would have done the job. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick161 Rnd5 Zion Tupuola-Fetui
A premium they did not need to pay, Zion Tupuola-Fetui a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick236 Rnd7 Blake Watson
The board had Blake Watson higher than slot 236, and the running back fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick245 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
Tanner McLachlan at the 245th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
